Five Point Foundation

In Matthew 7:24-27 and Luke 6:46-49, Jesus is talking about the wise and foolish man — how the wise man built his house on the rock and the foolish man built his house on the sand. When the storms of life came, one house stood firm and the other smashed to the ground. Jesus used the two men to create a contrast between those people who heard His words and lived by them, and those people who never applied His teaching.

In thinking of these Scriptures, I identify five things that we should build our life on: First and foremost, we must have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ; we must read, study and apply the Word of God to our lives; we need to spend time in prayer with God; we should worship God with our words and our actions; we should seek out fellowship with other believers.

I believe all five of these points contribute to the spiritual foundation Jesus was describing. We need a good foundation, because storms will come in all of our lives. Sometimes it may feel like a little thunder or lightning; sometimes it may seem as if we are about to be overwhelmed by a hurricane. But if we have built our life on a firm foundation, we'll come through those storms. We may shake a little, we may get some bumps and bruises, but our hope and faith is in the bedrock knowledge of who Christ is as our Savior.

Knowing that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever, knowing that my God shall supply all my needs according to His glorious riches, knowing that He will never leave me or forsake me. Knowing that we can stand and lift our eyes to Him and hold on to His promises.

Have you checked out your foundation lately? How's it doing?
